The pelvic floor assessment begins with a conversation about your symptoms, the events leading up to changes in your pelvic floor health, and what your goals are for pelvic health recovery through our physical therapy services.
I then assess your posture, including rib alignment and pelvic symmetry, as part of my physical therapy services. I evaluate the quality of movement in your back and hips while testing for strength. Additionally, I examine your abdomen for muscle tension, restrictions in scars, and general tissues over the bladder and uterus, as well as for muscle separation.
If you are experiencing issues related to urinary or bowel health or pelvic pain, the final step involves a pelvic floor assessment. The pelvic floor muscles can be observed externally in the vaginal and anal areas, and they can also be felt with a gloved finger in the vagina or rectum. During this assessment, I check for muscle tension, strength, endurance, and coordination. Furthermore, I evaluate how effectively you protect your pelvic floor muscles during everyday activities, including coughing, sneezing, and bowel movements. While this pelvic floor assessment is a crucial step in your pelvic health recovery, it does not need to be completed during the initial evaluation, or at all, if you are not comfortable with it.
I strongly believe in the importance of having a partnership with my client. Through a thorough pelvic floor assessment, I provide my clinical knowledge based on my findings. You can then use this information to aid in your pelvic health recovery, helping you achieve a more comfortable, stronger you with better function and less pain through the right physical therapy services.
