The evaluation begins with a conversation about your symptoms, events leading up to changes in your pelvic floor health, and what your goals are for therapy.
I then assess your posture including rib alignment and pelvic symmetry. I assess quality of movement of your back and hips, and test for strength. I evaluate your abdomen for muscle tension, restrictions in scars and general tissues over bladder and uterus, as well as for muscle separation.
If you are coming in with a condition relating to urinary or bowel health or pelvic pain, the final step is doing a pelvic floor assessment. Pelvic floor muscles can be seen on the outside of the vaginal and anal area. They can also be felt with one gloved finger in the vagina or rectum, where I check for muscle tension, strength, endurance and coordination. I also assess how well you protect your pelvic floor muscles with every day activities including coughing, sneezing, and bowel movements. While this is an important step in completing the puzzle, it does not have to be done at the initial evaluation, or ever if you are not comfortable with it.
I strongly believe in the importance of having a partnership with my client. I provide my clinical knowledge based on my assessment, and you use it to help achieve a more comfortable, stronger you with better function and less pain.
